Each year, Highline District hosts a sexual health education information night for families. State law requires schools to teach Comprehensive Sexual Health Education in grades K-12, but families may not be aware that they may opt out of any or all sexual health lessons.
FLASH (Family Life and Sexual Health) is the board-adopted curriculum that is taught in grades 4-12.
Next Tuesday, February 10, parents and family members have an opportunity to find out what health-related topics are covered in their child’s grade, and they will be able to review the curriculum.

Meeting Format Change
Last spring, in March 2025, the Highline District provided a two-hour meeting, which included a presentation of FLASH updates, school policies and state laws. It also afforded attendees an opportunity to hear each other’s questions, followed by answers from the district.
During the extended Q&A session, parents asked questions about topics including:
- gender identity and social emotional learning in Kindergarten,
- science and medical accuracy in sex ed lessons,
- Highline’s plan for addressing families whose family values did not align with the curriculum,
- how the opt-out process worked.
However, as noted in the article, Highline Invites Parents to Learn About Sex Ed Curriculum, Evades Direct Questions. answers did not satisfy several attendees.
This year, the district will change their format to a shorter one-hour “drop in” meeting. Instead of a formal two-hour meeting with group Q&A, the staff will answer one-on-one questions from parents and families.

According to the Highline District, one goal for the FLASH curriculum is to improve communication with families about relationships and sexual health. Optional family homework will be assigned too.
Sexual Health Education Night for Families is a great opportunity for families to know in advance what topics their children will be discussing in class.
