Before taking the bench, Stevens served as a Senior Felony Deputy Prosecutor, Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, and Chief Public Defender for the Colville Confederated Tribes. His broad legal background also includes international service as a prosecutor in Kosovo and a justice advisor in Afghanistan, as well as work as a federal civil rights investigator.
