Despite increasing state spending by 8% and passing the largest tax increase in state history, Democrats in the Washington Legislature voted to take child support from single moms on the edge of poverty.
On March 31, 2025, during House debate on Senate Bill 5176, Rep. Travis Couture offered amendment 929 to redirect funding from DEI programs at public universities to single-parent families on Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), ensuring they could receive their full child support payments.
House Democrats rejected the amendment and voted multiple times to continue the practice of garnishing child support. Gov. Bob Ferguson thanked legislative Democrats for their “hard work” and signed the budget into law.
