Supporters of SB 6346, the state income tax bill, say their goal is to make Washington’s tax code more progressive. But when was the last time Democrats cut sales taxes or property taxes to provide relief to those on the lower end of the economic spectrum? If past is prologue, as one House Democratic leader noted, it’s safe to assume this income tax, if passed, will apply to everyone by 2030.
Many of the same Senators now sponsoring the income tax bill voted to ban income taxes less than two years ago with the passage of I-2111. When Senate Majority Leader Jamie Pedersen was asked about this 180-degree reversal, he characterized the move as “a pie-crust promise. Easily made, easily broken.”
It’s no wonder there’s widespread mistrust of the Legislature.
Republicans oppose a state income tax. It’s not only unnecessary and unconstitutional – it will drive away jobs, hurt Washington’s economy, and eventually target everyone.
