In week two of the legislative session, the Legislature officially received the initiative to protect the integrity of girls’ sports in Washington. Initiative IL26-638, signed by roughly 450,000 Washingtonians, would ensure female athletes are not forced into unfair competition with biological males.
House and Senate Democrat leaders have said they do not plan to give the initiative a hearing.
After passing the largest tax increase in state history last year, Democrats spent week two hearing more tax bills:
▶️House Bill 1607, also known as the bottle tax. This would impose a 10 cent tax per container. It would also require beverage producers to pay more than $200 million per year in fees for a new bottle recycling program, which will be passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices.
▶️House Bill 2100 would impose a 5% payroll tax on jobs earning more than $125,000 per year in a company that employs more than 20 people.
House Republicans oppose new taxes. Washington has a spending problem, not a revenue problem – and these proposals will only serve to make Washington more unaffordable.
